McCOOK LAKE, S.D. -- Dennis R. Campbell, 61, of McCook Lake died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Dennis was born Dec. 9, 1949, in Sioux City, the son of Virgil and Darlene (Dagle) Campbell. He attended school at St. Boniface and graduated from Bishop Heelan High School.
Dennis married Susan Walding on June 7, 1969. He entered the U.S. Army shortly after and served in the Vietnam War. Dennis went to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1972 and had worked for the same telephone company through its growth and was still working for what is now Century Link. During this time, he continued to serve his country with the 185th Iowa Air National Guard, retiring with more than 20 years of service.
Dennis was a family man who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a Hawkeye fan and enjoyed gardening, working in his yard and in his home. Dennis enjoyed Western movies, especially films starring John Wayne. He was not an avid outdoorsman, but he sure tried. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, CWA Local 7103, Telco Triad Credit Union as a member of the board and was elected to the audit committee.
Survivors include his wife, Susan of McCook Lake; son, Troy and Robin Campbell of Sioux City; daughter, Sara and Matt Verzani of Sioux City; son, Eric and Melissa Campbell of Sioux City; his mother, Darlene Vanderzee of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Claire Campbell, Jack Campbell, Sophia Verzani, Giovanni Verzani and Nolan Campbell; and a brother, Thomas and Marie Campbell of Lake Jackson, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil.
