Dennis D. Mortensen

Dakota Dunes - Dennis D. Mortensen, 58, of Dakota Dunes, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at a Sioux Falls (S.D.) hospital.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. Visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Dennis was born June 14, 1954, in Audubon, Iowa, the son of Earl and Mildred (Mendenhall) Mortensen. He grew up in Audubon and graduated from the community high school in 1973. He was a member of MENSA. He attended Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City, where he received a degree in electronics.
He married his lifelong friend, Jeffery B. Fancher, March 1, 2010, in Sioux City.
Dennis was self-employed and most recently worked for AEA Education Iowa Communications Network.
Dennis enjoyed tinkering with all kinds of construction projects, including building an airplane. He enjoyed singing and participating in theater, whether it was community theater or working in theater productions. What he loved most in life was being with his friends and around people. Over the course of his life, he was known by many names, including Denny, Mort, Santa and friend.
Survivors include his partner, Jeffery of Dakota Dunes; his brother, Duane (Mardelle) Mortensen of Altoona, Iowa; his "adopted" sons, Dacota Hewitt of Sioux City and Tavey Sprenger and family of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Karen Mortensen of Akron, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Mike Mortensen, Shelley (Chad) Yost, Marc (JoAnne) Mortensen, Jill (Leo) Villalobos and Kevin (Allie) Mortensen; and many cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Don; and a nephew, Corrie Mortensen.
A memorial has been established in his name. A memorial service will be held Mon Dec 17th at the First Lutheran Church, 3601 Dakota Ave. S. Sioux City, Neb at 2:30 PM. The church will be open at 2:00 to 7:00 for visitors. There will be no viewing.
