JEFFERSON, S.D. -- Derald R. Smith, 80, of Jefferson died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at his residence.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. today at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 5206 Military Road, in Sioux City, with the Rev. Mark Groves of New Life Lutheran Church of Sergeant Bluff officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home. Derald Richard Smith was born June 10, 1929, to Chris and Ivy (Hughes) Smith in Clark, S.D. On April 11, 1951, he and Winifred Orth were married in Dakota City.
He was an avid outdoorsman. He spent a lot of time in the yard and garden.
He is survived by his wife, Winifred of Jefferson; a daughter, Diane and her husband, David Engelkes of Arnolds Park, Iowa; a son, Donald Smith of Sioux City; a daughter, Debbie Broveak of Sioux City; a son, David Smith of Jefferson; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte and her husband Emil Novak of Yankton, S.D.; a brother, Ed Smith of Vermillion, S.D.; numerous nieces, nephews other relatives; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Doug; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
