DeWayne Everette Benson

SIOUX CITY -- DeWayne E. Benson, 77, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

DeWayne Everett was born Oct. 29, 1931, in Jefferson, S.D., to Charles and Martha (Fry) Benson. As a young child, the family moved to the Riverside area, then to a farm north of town. They later moved back to the Riverside area, then back to the farm. He attended country school and Sioux City Everett.

He married Clarissa Belle Gamel on June 24, 1950, in Dakota City. Following their marriage, they resided in the Siouxland area. He was employed with the Great Northern Railroad for eight years and later with Western Paper in Sioux City. He worked at the time of the construction of I.B.P. and later stayed on in the maintenance department until 2000, when he retired. He also farmed his entire life.

He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Riverside Lutheran Church. He enjoyed baseball, fishing, mechanics, attending auctions, farming and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Clarissa of Sioux City. To this family was born four daughters, Connie and Orvis Trobaugh of Sioux City, Kelly Benson of Sioux City, Tracy and Jason Kamradt of North Platte, Neb., and Cindy Elaine Benson; seven sons, Dennis and Crystal Benson of Sioux City, Darrel Benson of Sioux City, Randy and Julie Benson of Sioux City, Chris and Kristy Benson of Sioux City, Clayton Benson of Sioux City, Dwight Evan Benson and Gerald Lynn Benson; 29 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Marvin Benson of Arizona; and three sisters, Mary Sham of California, Mardella and Jim LaPlant of California, and Donna Morriston of Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Orville, Lloyd, Verlyn and Elvin.
