Dolores M. Galvin (McGrath)

SIOUX CITY -- Dolores M. Galvin, 86, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at Westwood Nursing Home in Sioux City.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Monsignor Roger Augustine officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy Smith Funeral Home.
Dolores was born May 31, 1925, in Omaha, Neb., to Agnes and Harry McGrath. She was an active member of the Catholic church. Her faith was very important to her and how she lived her life. Dolores graduated in 1948 from Creighton University with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Her nurse's training was at St. Catherine's Hospital in Omaha. During her nurse's training, she was identified as cadet nurse for the U.S. Military. She worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City and later retired from nursing after working many years at Mercy Medical Center. Her nursing career was her vocation for caring for the sick. She was active in the Right to Life campaign and volunteered for Birth Right of Sioux City in the early 1970s.
She married Daniel C. Galvin on Dec. 26, 1949; they were married for 59 years. Her beloved husband preceded her in death on July 18, 2009. They raised four children in their home in Sioux City. She enjoyed spending time with her beloved husband and family, reading and was very active. She traveled to Ireland twice and loved the majestic beauty of the Colorado mountains.
Survivors include her two sons and their wives, John and Maryann Galvin of Merrill, Iowa, Thomas and Samantha Galvin of Hooker, Okla.; two daughters, Sheila and Michael Roche of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Mary Cougill of Lincoln, Neb.; her grandchildren, Brian Galvin, Michelle (Galvin) Banks, Samantha (Galvin) Pridie, Shawn Galvin, Thomas Galvin, Jr., Katie Galvin, Guner Galvin, Madison Galvin, Molly Roche, Joshua Johnson, Jenna (Cougill) Boon, Mindee Banys; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathleen and her husband, James Furey of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Galvin; her parents, Agnes and Harry McGrath; two brothers, Tom (Elise) McGrath and John "Jack" McGrath of Omaha.
