Donald Joseph "Donnie" Finzen, 89, of Sioux City, died Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Retirement Home Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Donald, the son of George and Catherine (Bosch) Finzen, was born on Feb. 17, 1928, in Anthon, Iowa. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Anthon.
Donald enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952 and served in the Korean War, where he was awarded four Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star Medal. The story of Donald's war wounds was featured prominently in an issue of the nationally published Stars and Stripes Newspaper. In June 1954, Donald was put in temporary retirement from the Marines due to his war injuries.
In November 1956, Donnie was united in marriage with Ona Banta in Oto, Iowa. They made their home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for 17 years, where their four children were born. The couple returned to Sioux City in 1973. Donald's children are, Greg (Janet) Finzen of Dakota Dunes, Diane Finzen, Susan Baumgarten, and Julie (Charlie) Hoberg, all of Sioux City.
Donald's life work was in home improvement. He loved to hunt and run a trap line. He was an avid fisherman who could often be found on the banks of the Little Sioux River with a stringer of catfish. He also loved going to the stock car races and having coffee with his buddies around town.
Donnie is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ona of Sioux City; his children; six grandchildren, Onna Behan, Marissa Behan, Adam Finzen, Andrew Finzen, Kyle Baumgarten, and Nicole Baumgarten; one great-grandchild, Lilly Behan; a brother, George (Berniece) Finzen of Sioux City; three sisters, Mary Jane Santelar of Scottsdale, Ariz., Suzanne Peterson of Marcus, Iowa, and JoAnn (Lyle) Groth of Climbing Hill, Iowa; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife's parents; two brothers, Bill and Jim; three sisters, Patsy, Ruth, and Frances; a son-in-law, Ken Baumgarten; 10 brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and two nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Holy Spirit Retirement Home Foundation.
