Sioux City - Donald L. Lawrenson, 91, of Sioux City passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Nea Huggins will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Masonic service, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral.
Don was born on Dec. 17, 1921, in Moorhead, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Mildred (Mustard) Lawrenson. The family came to Sioux City when Don was a child. He attended Sioux City schools and graduated from East High School in 1940.
On May 17, 1942, he married Virginia Nagel in Sioux City. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, flying 51 missions in a B-17 in Europe during World War II. After the service, he attended Iowa State University and earned his degree in 1951. Don owned and operated Lawrenson’s Veterinary Supply Co. from 1965 until he retired in 1997. His wife, Virginia, died on Aug. 18, 2012.
He was very active at Wesley United Methodist Church. Don was a member of Morningside Masonic Lodge 615 where he had been a Past Master. He was also a member of the Sioux City Scottish Rite and was a 33rd Degree Honorary Inspector General. He was a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine and had served as a past patron for the Azure Chapter of O.E.S. He was a member of the High Twelve Club and was a 60-year member of the American Legion. Don served as a Sioux City councilman for four years and as mayor in 1978 and 1979. He then served on the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors for 12 years, from 1981 to 1992.
Don is survived by his children, Donna Lee and Dennis Wurster of Sioux City, Gary and Linda Lawrenson of Iowa City, Iowa, Jack and Alice Lawrenson of Sioux City, and Barbara Ann and Jim Meurer of Golden, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Randy and Pam Wurster, Brad and Candace Wurster, Kate Lawrenson, Nora Lawrenson, Travis and Brandy Lawrenson, Brooke and Mike Fink, and Elizabeth Meurer; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; a granddaughter, Tracy Ann Wurster; two brothers, Robert and Wayne; and a sister, Eileen Flannery.
A memorial has been established in his name for Wesley United Methodist Church.
