SIOUX CITY -- Donald A. Swanson, 92, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. The Rev. Adam Warrad of Buchanan Avenue Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Don was born in Thurston, Neb., on Aug. 31, 1918. He moved to a farm on Glen Ellen Road in rural Sergeant Bluff in the fifth grade.

That was where he met Margaret G. Baker whom would later become his bride in July 1941. On a Saturday night in January 1942, Don made the decision to accept the Lord Jesus Christ, as his personal savior. The Swansons gave their lives to the Lord. They traveled the country for Billy Graham films and for World Vision. During those years, they lived in Kansas City, New York City and Los Angeles. They eventually moved to a farm in Royal, Iowa. Don later received a calling to start a rehabilitation farm for alcoholics near Duluth, Minn. Don later served on the board and led the effort to construct the Christian Radio Station WWJC in Duluth. Once the station became fully operational, the Swansons moved back to rural Sioux City and began an effort to construct another Christian radio station to serve the Siouxland area.

On Nov. 11, 1965, KTFC 103.3 FM went on the air for the first time. The Swansons later acquired KVSR in Rapid City, S.D., which they sold in the early 1990s. They also operated KTFJ in Dakota City and KTFG in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Don still owns KTFJ. Don started Paradise City in the Riverside area of Sioux City in 1981, a children's ministry. He operated it until 1991. Don was invited to share the gospel at several area churches and also at the Sioux City Gospel Mission. His life was dedicated to spreading the word of the Lord.

He is survived by a brother-in-law and his wife, Burton and Jean Baker of Sioux City; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Eastwood of Hammond, Idaho; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Margaret.
