SIOUX CITY -- Donna Jeanette Kass, 72, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, July 30, 2009, at a local nursing home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Glendale Baptist Church, with Pastor Leroy Struble officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent to

Donna was born Aug. 28, 1936, in Sioux City to Franklin and Maude (Hughes) Crooks Sr. She grew up and attended Sioux City schools, graduating from Central High School in 1955. She later attended and graduated from Ellis' Beauty School in 1956.
On Sept. 22, 1960, she married Charles E. Kass in Sioux City. Donna worked at the beauty shop at Younkers for five years and then later as the beautician at Sunrise Retirement Community for 26 years. She retired in 1996 due to health reasons. She was a lifelong resident of Sioux City.
She was a member of Glendale Baptist Church in Sioux City and the Ladies Aide at the church. She also taught Sunday school for a number of years. Donna was an avid softball fan, enjoyed stock car races, shopping, conversing with others, watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities, attending auctions, being active in her church activities, bowling and playing cards.
Survivors include her husband, Charles of Sioux City; two daughters, Myra DeRaad and special friend, Chad Luse of Sioux City, and Melissa Kass and significant other, Byron Johnson of Sioux City; a son, Merlin Kass of Sioux City; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six great-stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Mylet Kass; a son-in-law, Steve DeRaad; two sisters, Carole B. Lile of Walthill, Neb.; an infant sister; and a brother, Franklin S. Crooks Jr.
