Dora was born on March 31, 1921, to Fred and Clara (Sewing) Reed. She grew up in Sioux City, graduating from East High with the class of 1939. She then attended the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, becoming an RN in 1942.
On Nov. 17, 1945, Dora married Lt. Bernard M. Posey. The couple moved to Washington, D.C., where Bernard was employed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Dora worked at Columbia Hospital for Women and later, at Clinton Community Hospital.
Retiring to Sioux City in 1984, Dora and Bernard were able to renew many old friendships and become active members of the community. She was continually captivated by the stories of the patients at the Wildlife Lodge. Dora belonged to NARFE and AARP, was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, Lydia women’s circle and the Cardinal Toppers Red Hat Society. For more than 50 years, she was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star, both in Washington and Sioux City.
All who knew Dora will remember her beautiful smile and ready sense of humor, kindness to everyone and her simple, deep faith in her Savior.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Guy and Lynn (Mikkelsen) Posey; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Everett and Juanita Posey; lifelong friends from the Washington area, Sophia (Tommie) Hamel and children, Claudia and Arthur; many nieces and nephews; and her friends of St. James Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sister, Bonnie Hyslop; and several brothers and sisters–in-law.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Levay, Jeff Buchman, Charles Yates, John Jorstad, Jon Wagoner and Dr. Joe Kinzey. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and members of St. James United Methodist Church.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to St. James United Methodist Church or the Wildlife Lodge and Clinic, both c/o 2800 Summit, Sioux City, IA 51104.
