Doreen Kay Schoonover was born on December 22, 1945, in Sioux City, Iowa to Ralph and Lucille (Beldin) Trapp. She attended Bishop Heelan Catholic High School, graduating in 1965.
She married Thomas D. Berger September 10, 1965. They later divorced but remained friends until his death in 2008.
She married Charles A. Schoonover on July 30, 1982. Together they raised seven children. Charles and Doreen were lifelong residents of Sioux City, Iowa. Doreen worked in retail early in their marriage, eventually settling in with the Sioux City Community School District as a custodian, retiring in 2004.
Doreen was a member of St. Boniface Church where she volunteered as a Eucharistic minister to those who could not attend mass. She was an active member of the Siouxland Center for Active Generations where she helped host a weekly knitting/crochet class. She especially enjoyed visiting with all the sweet ladies who loved knitting as much as she did. Doreen was always working on her next project, a blanket for the newest baby or an item for the next craft fair. One of her favorite things to do was to shop around Walmart and to run errands with her husband. Walmart lost one of their best customers for sure. Above all Doreen was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved to be around people and people loved being around her.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 40 years, Charles; her children, Janelle Haines (Dale) of Deepwater, MO; Jason Berger (Chemane) of South Sioux City, NE; Robert Schoonover (Theresa) of McLeod, OK; Richard Schoonover (Carol) of Sioux City, IA; Ronika Ryan (Doug) of Sioux City, IA; Chad Schoonover (Jenny) of Fairview Heights, IL; and Erik Schoonover of Sioux City, IA. She is also survived by 22 grandkids and 34 great-grandkids.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son Jeffrey, her brother Gary L. Trapp, a great-grandchild, and numerous aunts and uncles and cousins.
