Doris E. Nystrom, 79, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at Countryside Senior Living.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Russell Senstad, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Doris was born Nov. 20, 1928, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the daughter of Henry J. and Stella A. (Carlberg) Hanson. She was raised on a farm near Garretson, S.D. The family then moved to Sioux Falls, and she graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in 1946.
She married Paul A. Nystrom on Oct. 25, 1950, at Beaver Valley Lutheran Church in Valley Springs, S.D. He died on Sept. 13, 1963, in Sioux City. Doris lived in Sioux Falls until 1954, when the family moved to Sioux City. In 1977, she moved back to Sioux Falls and lived there until 1994, when she returned to Sioux City. Doris worked as an operator for Northwestern Bell and U.S. West a combination of 20 years, both in Sioux City and Sioux Falls. She retired in 1990.
She was of the Lutheran faith. She was a member of Telecom Pioneers of America (T.P.A.) and a former member of Eastern Star. Doris enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce Nystrom of Iowa City, Iowa, and Craig Nystrom and his wife, Elena of Sioux City; a daughter, Becky Minter of Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Viola and Jim Russell of Stillwater, Minn., and Ruth and Joe Picasso of Spearfish, S.D.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Jahde and Fran Nystrom, both of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, John Hanson; and a sister, Mary L. Martinez.
Pallbearers will be Skip Jahde, Wade Reid, Ed Sorensen, Ryan Martinez and Chuck Miller.
