Dorothy A. Bengford, 90, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at her home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin Catholic Church in Odebolt, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Martin Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Visitation will resume at 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.
Dorothy was born on April 14, 1925, in Arthur, Iowa, the daughter of Omar and Marie Elva (Burnight) Williams. She was raised in Arthur and graduated from Arthur High School in 1942. She then attended beauty school in Des Moines, working in beauty shops in both Des Moines and Storm Lake, Iowa.
On Jan. 11, 1946, she married Joe Bengford in Schaller, Iowa. The couple farmed the Look Out farm by Odebolt until 1968, when they moved to Sioux City. Dorothy worked at St. Luke's Hospital from 1969 to 1971 in the nursery. She sewed draperies for Younker's Department Store and then operated D & J Drapery for 18 years with her daughter, Joan. She retired in 2004. Joe died on Feb. 18, 1988.
She truly loved sewing, needlework and was known for her beautiful quilts. Dorothy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City.
She is survived by her children, Michael (Lee) of Irvine, Calif., Angela Goergen of Sioux City, Milo (Sharan) of Sioux City, and Joan (Jim) Hawthorne of Sioux City; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lois Redden of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sons, Gregory, Marvin, Douglas and his wife, Kathy; son-in-law, Richard Goergen; two grandchildren, Troy Daniel and Jessica Lynn; brother, John Williams; sister-in-law, Jeanette Williams; and brother-in-law, Eugene Redden.
