Dorothy Louise Bonnes (Hansen)

Dorothy Louise Bonnes, 82, of Sioux City died Monday, Aug, 6, 2007, at her home.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Burial of the ashes will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Dorothy Louise (Hansen) Bonnes was born on Sept. 2, 1924, in the Morningside area of Sioux City. She grew up in Morningside and graduated from East High School.

She met Warren Bonnes of Hinton, Iowa, and they were married on March 4, 1945. They spent a brief time in San Francisco while Warren served our country in the U.S. Navy during the war. Dorothy enjoyed working for the Western Union as a telegrapher while she was there. After Warren's discharge, the couple moved to Hinton, where they farmed for several years. They then moved to the Morningside area of Sioux City, where Dorothy started raising their three boys and worked as a self-employed seamstress. Warren began a career with the Burlington Northern Railroad. As the years passed, Dorothy worked for Aalfs Manufacturing and also for J.C. Penney's.

She was active in the American Business Women's Association and held several leadership positions in the organization. She always pursued artistic hobbies but eventually fell in love with china painting. She was active in their world organization, regional activities and held offices in the local chapter. She taught china painting as well as displayed her work at many events. For many years, this was her passion.

Survivors include her three sons, Doug of Sioux City, Gordon and his wife, Barbara of Overland Park, Kan. and Ray and his wife, Lynell of Dallas, Oregon; four grandchildren, Todd, Angela, Krystle and Kimberly; a sister, Charlotte Cosler and her husband, Kenneth of Albany, Ore.; two brothers, John of Sioux City and Ray and his wife, Sharon of Deming, N.M.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Erni Hansen; her husband, Warren; six brothers, Arnold, George, Melvin, Edwin, James and Richard; two sisters, Anna and Metha; and a granddaughter, Stacy.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name.
