Dorothy Alice Farrer (Wehde)

June 10, 1912 — December 27, 2009

SIOUX CITY -- Dorothy Alice Farrer, 97, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, and is on her long-awaited journey to heaven to reunite with her teenage sweetheart and lifetime love.

A celebration of her life will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to christysmith.com.

Born June 10, 1912, in Omaha to Hugo and Anna (Trawitzky) Wehde, Dorothy lived most of her life in Sioux City.

She wed teenage sweetheart, Vincent J. Farrer Sr. on June 8, 1931, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Along life's journey, Dorothy helped her husband operate Gately Cleaners, worked at Lewis Bedding, ran a post office at the air base and doled out smiles with sandwiches at St. Joseph and Marian hospitals until she retired in 1984.

In her free time, she loved to draw and sew her own clothes. Through life, Dorothy never lost her sense of humor, believing that you don't stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing. Helping her enjoy many hours of laughter were the four generations of family.

She is survived by a son, Vincent (Marilyn) Farrer Jr. of Sioux City; a daughter, Sister Betty Farrer of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a niece, Ruth (Norbert) Haas, whom she raised like her own daughter since childhood, of Lincoln, Neb.; a granddaughter, Sherry LaFleur of Dakota Dunes; a granddaughter, Debbie (Bill) Hoffman of South Sioux City; a grandson, Steve (Camra) Farrer of Hinton, Iowa; a granddaughter, Susie (John) Sherman of Eagle, Neb.; a grandson, Joe (Rhonda) Haas of Lincoln; a grandson, Jim Haas of Lincoln; a granddaughter, Shirley (Mike) Addleman of Lincoln; 18 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Farrer Sr.; three brothers; three sisters; a grandson-in-law; and a great-granddaughter.

The family would like to express special thanks to Sunrise Retirement and their dedicated employees for taking care of Dorothy for the last four and one half years of her life. The family further appreciates the assistance of Hospice of Siouxland.
