SIOUX CITY -- Dorothy Hagan Kelly, 96, of Sioux City passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011, at a local hospital.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Northside Christy Smith Larkin Funeral Home.
Dorothy Francis Mary Agnes was born Oct. 8, 1914, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Elizabeth Mary (Burns) and Vincent Joseph Hagan. She grew up in Sioux City, attended Cathedral High School and graduated from Central High School in 1932. She attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn. She returned to Sioux City to work at Hagan Plumbing.
On Jan. 4, 1936, she married John C. Kelly of the Sioux City Tribune. (merged with Sioux City Journal in 1941). She was a homemaker. She was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a 60-year-plus member of the Sioux City Country Club. She was active in volunteer work for many years through the Junior League of Sioux City and the Catholic Women's League; served as a den mother; helped found an investment club that lasted several decades and was a past member of the local District Judicial Nominating Commission. She worked at AAA as a travel agent from 1967 to 1973. In addition to her family, she enjoyed bridge, golf, travel and reading.
She is survived by four sons and three daughters: John C. Jr. and his wife, Willie, of Sioux City, V. Hagan of Alta, Calif., Molly A. Sokolowski and her husband, Gary, of Sioux City, Timothy B. and Cynthia of San Francisco, Calif., Dorothy M. (Meg) Evans and her husband, Gil of Spring Valley, Calif., Wm. Rory and his wife, Pat, of Sioux City, and Katie L. Colling and her husband, Ron, of Sioux City; 18 grandchildren, Cindy Agnes and her husband Bob, Liz Mittet and her husband Bob, Virginia Clark and her husband Mark, John C. Kelly III and his wife Mary Ann, Padraic Kelly and his wife Laura, Timory Peel and her husband Jon, Tracy Kelly and her husband Guy Blundell, Heidi Willis and her husband Winston, Peter Sokolowski, Ryan Kelly, Morgan Kelly, Mykie Evans, Kelly Evans and her special friend Dustin Dunbar, Jamie Hudson and her husband Brett, Cory Evans, Meghan Kelly and her special friend Gabriel Harrison, Brendan Kelly and Bridget Kelly Wood and her husband Dan; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; John, her husband of 50 years on March 23, 1987; four brothers, William V. Hagan, Stewart J. Hagan, Gordon J. Hagan and Eugene B. Hagan; a son, E. Kevin Kelly; and a grandson, Edward C. Kelly.
The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the staff of Bickford Cottage Independent Living for the loving care they extended to our mother during her stay there, as well as to Hospice of Siouxland and Mercy Medical for their exemplary provision of comfort and care.
