SIOUX CITY -- Dorothy Pauline Parris, 87, of Sioux City died Friday, March 5, 2010, at Sunrise Retirement Community.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Valerie Heller officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Dorothy was born Feb. 21, 1923, at Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Terrance and Leila (Ferguson) McDermott. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Laurens, Iowa, where she attended school and graduated from high school. She continued her education at the University of Iowa. Dorothy moved to California in the early 1940s.
She married John William "Bill" Parris on March 31, 1943, in Long Beach, Calif. They made their home in California, moving to Laurens, Iowa, in 1949, for a short time before moving to Sioux City. Bill died on July 5, 1971. Dorothy remained in Sioux City and worked as an aid at Whittier Elementary School. She then worked at the Social Security Administration, retiring in 1986.
Dorothy was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Meircoles Club and the Mr. & Mrs. Club. Dorothy enjoyed playing bridge with the Floyd Golf Course Bridge Club and several other clubs. She loved playing word and card games, especially with her family.
Survivors include three daughters, Pamela Jane Parris of Arlington Heights, Ill., Dr. Deborah and Dr. Rodney Zeitler of Iowa City, Iowa, and Jean and T. Daniel Graham of Sioux City; three sons, Timothy and Angela Parris of Pasadena, Calif., Thomas Parris of Palatine, Ill., and Jonathon Parris and Kathi Henley of Perry, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, Emily, Laura and T.J. Parris, John, Tina and Tricia Parris, William, Beth and Joe Zeitler, Matthew Parris, John, Meredith, Bobby, Michael and David Graham; and a sister-in-law, Cleora Parris of Storm Lake, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; a brother, Patrick McDermott; and a sister, Janice Bertao.
