SERGEANT BLUFF -- Dorothy A. Philp, 98, of Sergeant Bluff died Oct. 30, 2010, at the Embassy Rehab and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Groves of New Life Lutheran Church in Sergeant Bluff officiating. Dorothy was born Dec. 7, 1911, in Alton, Kan., the daughter of John J. and Pearl M. (Cooley) Brent. She attended school there until the family moved to the Rodney, Iowa, area., where she continued her education. She graduated from Smithland (Iowa) High School in 1930.
She married Hans Lincoln Slagle Green in Le Mars, Iowa. They farmed in the Rodney area. Mr. Green died in a tractor accident on May 19, 1951, near Rodney. She then went to beauty school to become a beautician. She then moved to Pocahontas, Iowa, where she owned and operated her own beauty salon.
She later married Carroll E. "Buster" Philp on Jan. 21, 1960, in Pocahontas. They then moved to Laurens, Iowa, where she continued to operate her own beauty salon. In 1972, they moved to an acreage near Oto, Iowa. She operated her salon in her home. Mr. Philp died Sept. 21, 1974, in Sioux City. She moved to the Sergeant Bluff area in 1994.
She was a member of the German City (Iowa) St. John's Evangelical Church. She enjoyed playing board games with her sisters and brothers-in-law. She enjoyed cooking, baking and helping other people. Family was everything to her. She liked to write letters and postcards to her family and friends. She would also do hair for family members without charge.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Mick Drea of Sergeant Bluff; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Teresa Green of Madison, S.D.; five grandchildren, Terry Drea of Los Angeles, Calif., Greg Drea of Anthon, Iowa, Cincy Konopasek of Yankton, S.D., Brett Drea of Ankeny, Iowa, and Kristina "Kristy" Hainy of Fairmont, Minn.; 13 great-grandchildren, Lexa Drea Begley, Alex, Niki Drea, Brandon Drea, Cassi and Drew Konopasek, Brennan, Kaylee, MaKenna and Brayden Drea, Cameron, Sydney and Paige Hainy; a great-great-grandson, Colton Begley; and a brother-in-law, Clifford Cook of Havelock, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; a grandson, Maurey Drea; two brothers, Claude and Donald Brent; and two sisters, Hallie M. Cook and Ruby Areman.
