Dorothy Ann Sorensen (Halweg)

LAWTON, Iowa -- Dorothy Ann (Halweg) Sorensen, 74, of Lawton passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery, Lawton. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Dorothy was born Aug. 20, 1933, on the family farm near Merrill, Iowa, to Louis and Tena (Kruse) Halweg. She graduated from Le Mars (Iowa) Central High School with the class of 1951. She went to join her sister, Darlene, to share an apartment and work in Sioux City. Her first job was cashier at Metz Baking Company. She then went to work at Mutual Loan Company and Postal Finance as a cashier and clerk.

She married Wallace Edward Sorensen on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1956, in Craig, Iowa. Their union was blessed with three children. She began work for the U.S. Postal Service, when the children were school age. She worked as an office clerk part-time, then finished her career with 18 years of driving a rural mail route.

She became active with the Iowa and National Rural Letter Carriers Associations. She served on the state board for three years and in 1992 was honored as Iowa's Outstanding Carrier of the Year. She received her 30-year retirement pin in 1996, and continued to remain active in the association. Her many hobbies included traveling with family and friends, building her dream home, dancing, tending her flower garden and most specially, attending every concert, play, ball game and special event in the lives of her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a longtime member of Morningside Lutheran Church and enjoyed her many friendships there.

She is survived by her husband, Wallace of Lawton; three children, Mark Sorensen of Wayne, Neb., Bruce Sorensen and his wife, Shelly of Lawton and Julie and her husband, Brad Skaar of Story City, Iowa; and two sisters and their husbands, Darlene and Ivan Jeppson of Bancroft, Neb., and Janet and Daniel Penning of Remsen, Iowa. She leaves behind five grandchildren, Garrett, Ryan and Samuel Skaar and Robert and Katie Sorensen; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Leonard Halweg.
