Dorothy E. Swanson, 97, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Dorothy was born on Dec. 10, 1915, in Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary (Thinnes) Muth. She grew up in Hawarden and attended Hawarden Catholic School.
Dorothy married Arthur H. Swanson on Dec. 20, 1937. They made their home in Sioux City. Dorothy worked as a seamstress at J.C. Penney and Betty’s Bridal, retiring in 1967. Arthur died in 1998.
Dorothy was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she was very active in church events. She loved to do crafts, sewing, cooking and making pies. Dorothy and Arthur enjoyed going dancing and seldom missed a dance. They were snow birds, who wintered in Florida for more than 20 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn and William Bride of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Lisa, Joe, Tom, Brian and Brice; nine great-grandchildren, Skyler, Kameron, Brayden, Noah, Jacob, Zachary, Tyler, Jarod and Logan; two brothers, Bernard Muth of Sioux City, and William Muth of Omaha; and a sister, Madeline Carlson of Winsted, Minn.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur; daughter, Linda Daws; and five brothers.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or Holy Spirit Retirement Community.
