SIOUX CITY -- Douglas H. Bisland, 86, of Sioux City died Monday, June 22, 2009, at his residence.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard A. Sitzmann officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military conducted by the U.S. Air Force. Douglas was born Sept. 29, 1922, in Yonkers, N.Y., the son of Clarence and Edna (Sternenberg) Bisland. He grew up and attended school in New York, graduating from George Washington Heights High School. He worked for HJ Hinz Company after graduation. He continued his education at Long Island University and Morningside College in Sioux City. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and was stationed at the Sioux City Air Base. He served during World War II and was honorably discharged in February 1946. He served in the 174th Fighter Squadron Air Guard Unit into the early 1950s.
He met Sophie Meilunas while dancing to Lawrence Welk at the ballroom in the Commerce Building in Sioux City. They were married on June 30, 1945. He worked as a flight inspector for various airlines. He also worked for Boeing Aircraft for experimental aircraft test flights as a government inspector. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1953 until his retirement in 1984.
He was a member of St. Casimir Catholic Church, which he tried to keep active as a parish. He was a member and past president of the Postal Union. He enjoyed going to dances with his wife and friends and was an ardent golfer. He loved and had many cats, especially his beloved cat, Smokey.
Survivors include his wife, Sophie Bisland of Sioux City; a daughter, Karin Bisland of Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Anne Thomas of Omaha; and many cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Bisland and Edna Bisland-Oppenheim; a sister, Barbara; stepfather, Frederick Oppenheim; and stepmother, Jean Bisland.
