Douglas John McQuade

SERGEANT BLUFF -- Doug J. McQuade, 77, of Sergeant Bluff passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Nativity, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Doug was born Feb. 6, 1931, in Marion, N.D., to Peter and Nellie (Lester) McQuade. He attended school and graduated from high school in 1948 in Mont Pelier, N.D. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

On Jan. 22, 1962, he married Zoe A. Slattery at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City. The family lived in the Morningside area and moved to Sergeant Bluff in 1973, where they had resided ever since. In the early years, he worked in highway road construction. He later owned and operated McQuade Heavy Hauling for 22 years. He later drove for C.P.T. and other area farmers. His last occupation was a rural postal carrier for the Sergeant Bluff Post Office. He retired in 2005.

He was a member of Church of the Nativity and a charter member of two different Knights of Columbus groups. He also served in many different ways within the organization at the state level. He served on the parent's club at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, and on the Heelan Parent's Club. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, visiting with others and time spent with family. He was a very mechanically minded individual, who loved doing things around the house and fixing things.

Survivors include his wife, Zoe of Sergeant Bluff; a son, Mike and Darlene Biddle of Blair, Neb.; a daughter, Karen Royalty of Sergeant Bluff; a son, Mark and Pamela McQuade of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter, Shelly and Jon Sadler of Sergeant Bluff;13 grandchildren, Thomas and Angie McCalmont, Terri and Nathan Ward, Kelly and Travis Ladwig, Chris, Jennifer Royalty, Stacy, Melissa, Jessica Biddle, Benjamin and Sean McQuade, Matt, Jayna, Sarah Sadler; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doreen Evanson of Seattle, Wash., and Vanita and George Jensen of Rochester, Minn.; and his beloved dog and television companion, Fred.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Eileen Schleis; and two sisters, Wilma Vandam and Bonnie McQuade.

He was dearly loved and will be missed by his family and especially his grandchildren.
