SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Duane Clifford Peterson Sr., 75, of South Sioux City died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at the Veterans Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Pastor Dan Nieman officiating. Burial will be in Smithland Cemetery at Smithland, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Duane was born on Jan. 20, 1934, in Sergeant Bluff, the son of Clifford and Luella (Dawdy) Peterson, and was raised in the Smithland area. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 until 1955, serving in Inchon, Korea.
On Sept. 4, 1954, he married Gloria Rhode in Sioux City. She died on Aug. 11, 1985, in Onawa, Iowa. On Sept. 13, 1986, he married Marge Taylor-Culver in Elk Point, S.D. Duane was an owner/operator of his own truck for several years. He worked for the Dakota County Assessor's Office. He managed the Lake Village Trailer Court and also worked as a security guard for the Terra Center. After he retired, he worked at the Siouxland Community Blood Bank.
He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1973 and had served as the post commander. He would go to area schools and service clubs and speak on behalf of the Post. Duane also had a large collection of cigarette lighters. He was loved and will be missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Marge of South Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Mona and Reggie Torno of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Duane C. Jr. and Sandy of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Tom and Mary of Kingsley, Iowa; a son and his wife, Larry and Kathy Culver of northern Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Bobbi and Brent Culbertson of Dakota City; a daughter and her husband, Cherry and Chris Dennis of Yale, Okla.; a daughter and her husband, Kathy and Randy Montgomery of Dakota City; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters and their husbands, Doris and Don Smith of Montello, Wis., and Loretta Kay and Arlin Munter of Moorhead, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gloria; a son, Darwyn; a brother, Merlin; and a sister, Merry Bernice.
