MOVILLE, Iowa -- Dwight Tabke, 79, of Moville passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Moville, with the Rev. Harold Werley officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.
Dwight attended and graduated from Moville High School in 1949. He continued his education at Iowa State College. Throughout school, he was active in 4-H and showed Aberdeen Angus cattle throughout the Midwest. He received many awards including junior grand champion of the 4-H show at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., and junior reserve champion at the Chicago International Stock Show. At the age of 15, he was the youngest member ever to be in the Denver Post Gallery Hall of Fame in 1946. He also received the F.L. Eaton and leadership scholarship award at 4-H camp in Shelby, Mich.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 20, 1951, in Omaha and reached the rank of corporal. He served in the Korean conflict in Japan and Korea. He was honorably discharged from the service on March 17, 1953.
Dwight married Mary Lou Sargent on May 31, 1953. He farmed his entire life in the Moville area, raising registered purebred Angus cattle. He retired in 1998.
He was a member of Moville United Methodist Church. He was a member and past president of the Meadows Golf Club. In 1967, he was voted Outstanding Young Farmer by the Sioux City Jaycees. He was a charter member and past president of the Moville Jaycees.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; five children, Lane and Kathy Tabke of Moville, Suzanne and Dennis Desy of Sioux City, Garrett and Rita Tabke of Moville, Shawn Tabke and his fiancee, Mary Lou Olson of Hulett, Wyo., and Brett and Erika Tabke of Austin, Texas; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Tabke, Bradley and Katy Tabke, Brianne and Grant Streck, Tricia Tabke, Michelle and Tim Clark, Brooke Tabke, Tyson Tabke and Eleanor Tabke; four great-grandchildren, Jean Tabke, Kadence Streck, Max and James Clark; and a great-stepgranddaughter, Aubrey Wynn.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Vesta Tabke; grandparents, Henry and Minnie Tabke; his wife's parents, Lewis and Minnie Sargent; two brothers-in-law, Wayne Rumohr and Lyle Medcalf; and a sister-in-law, Mae Sargent.
