E. Farrell Hansen

SIOUX CITY -- Elwood Farrell Hansen, 84, of Sioux City died Monday, March 9, 2009, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Don Botic officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Farrell was born March 5, 1925, in Des Moines, the son of Elwood F. and Berniece (Pace) Hansen. He moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, at the age of one. He graduated from Fort Dodge High School, in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed on the USS Monterey and served in the Pacific Theater.
On Dec. 26, 1948, he married Lyall Avonne Butler in Fort Dodge. The couple lived in Fort Dodge until the early 1950s, when they moved to Clearwater, Fla., for two years. They then returned to Fort Dodge and moved to Sioux City in 1965. He worked as a design draftsman for Griffith and Co. Architecture, Architects Associated, Beutler and Arnold, F.E.H. and RML Architects. He retired in 1993.
He had been a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church since 1965 and sang in the church choir for many years. In Fort Dodge, he was a member of Fort Dodge Men's Civic Glee Club. He enjoyed camping, gardening, oil painting and building models including boats, planes and architectural models. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Cub master for Cub Scout Pack 212 and served as a Scout master for Troop 208 for more than 35 years. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, which is the highest award given to volunteer leaders by the Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by his wife, Lyall of Sioux City; six children, Linda and Greg Puttmann of Pierson, Iowa, Alan and Lori of Sioux City, Paul of Correctionville, Iowa, Brian and Tina of Sioux City, Susan and Rick Stoulil of Austin, Minn., and Keith and Eileen of Sioux City; 12 grandchildren, Alicia and Brett Caspers, Kirk and Sara Puttmann, Jeff Hansen, Cheri Hansen, Daniel Hansen, Melissa Hansen, Michelle Hansen and Luke Edwards, Sarah Hansen, Marcus Stoulil, Jason Stoulil, Amy Stoulil, David Hansen and Alison Hansen; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marie and Ken Harter of Sully, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Roy and Verna Butler of Charlotte, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard; and two grandchildren, Christopher Hansen and Carolyn Stoulil.
A memorial has been established in his name for Boy Scout Troop 208 and Morningside Presbyterian Church.
