E. Neil Johnson

Dr. Edward Neil Johnson, 77, of Dakota Dunes, S.D., died on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at the Stony Brooke Assisted Living Facility.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Tom LoVan officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hills Cemetery at Alcester, S.D. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Neil was born in Great Falls, Mont., on Sept. 11, 1935. He was the son of Carl Edward and Lila Marie (Gubberd) Johnson. He was raised in Alcester and graduated from Alcester High School. He attended Luther Jr. College and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Neil served in the United States Air Force as a captain from 1959 until 1961.
On Sept. 22, 1963, he married Eldora Marie Shuck in Alcester, S.D. Neil worked as an oral surgeon for the Veterans Administration for eight years. He then owned and operated Gaffney & Johnson Oral Surgery in Sioux Falls for 13 years. After he retired, the couple moved to the Phoenix, Ariz., area before coming to Dakota Dunes about eight years ago. Eldora died on Jan. 6, 2007.
Neil was a former member of Nathaniel Lutheran Church in Alcester and was a member of the Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He had served as the secretary for the S.E. District Dental Society in Sioux Falls. He was very active with the Sioux Falls Habitat for Humanity and was given the Volunteer of the Decade award in 2000.
He is survived by his three children, Lisa and Jerry Prochilo of Long Island, N.Y., Todd and Heather Johnson of Dakota Dunes, and Stacia and Matt Bowman of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Stewart, Victoria Stewart, Alyssa Johnson, Tyler Johnson and Erica Johnson; a brother and his wife, Robert D. and Mildred Johnson of Peoria, Ariz.; and a sister, Beverly Jean Olson of Marquette, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a sister, Joyce Eileen Pearson.
