SIOUX CITY -- Earl Henry Luhr, 94, of Sioux City died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Sunrise Retirement Community.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ryan Christenson officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Mr. Luhr was born Sept. 1, 1916, on the family farm near Waterbury, Neb., the son of Hugo G. and Ida F. (Noe) Luhr. He graduated from Waterbury (Neb.) High School in 1934.
He married Velma I. Kimbell on Sept. 1, 1940, in South Sioux City. He was employed as a route salesman at Chesterman Company for 38 years. He retired in 1982.
He was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church. Earl enjoyed golfing, woodworking and yard work. He was known as Mr. Fix-It by the family.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Velma of Sioux City; two daughters, Jan Watson and her husband, Gordon of Benton, Ark., and Julie Luhr of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Jonathan (Laural) Watson of Benton, Ark., and Jennifer Watson of New York City, N.Y.; a step-granddaughter, Sherry (Don) Scherden of Lubbock, TX; two great-grandchildren, Grant and Cole Watson; a step-great-grandson, Tyler Kade; one brother, Raymond Luhr of Centralia, Wash.; one sister, Lucile Luhr of Wayne, Neb.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Virgil, Clarence and Leo Luhr; and one sister, Pauline Seiboldt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Earl's name may be directed to St. James United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
