SIOUX CITY -- Edna C. (Schachterle) Mayhew, 91, of Sioux City peacefully entered heaven Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at Countryside Retirement Center.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Her parents were Andrew and Anna (Zeiler) Schachterle, who were German immigrants. She was raised and educated in Colorado. After the Depression, as the war clouds were circling, the telephone company saw a need for operators in the future. The telephone company hired Edna and she worked for three and one half years in Denver, Colo., then transferred to Northwestern Bell in Sioux City. She continued working until her retirement after 35 years.
On March 23, 1945, Edna married Bill Mayhew at Trinity Methodist Church in Denver, Colo. They were married for more than 60 years until he passed away in September 2006.
She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star 502 and Telephone Pioneers in Sioux City.
She considered herself fortunate to have had special people in her life, her husband; her family; niece, Linda Warren; Aunt Mary; Hilda O'Neill, Grace Shoning, Lena Stansbury, and Carter Gardner. Her brother, George; and sister, Ruth, now deceased, also added joy to her life. She is survived her two brothers, Milton and Paul (Dorothy) of Denver; a sister, Martha of Longmont, Colo.; and seven nieces and nephews who are scattered in Colorado.
Memorials may be sent to the Cancer Center.
Edna will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
