SIOUX CITY -- Edna Jean Sponder, 83, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Denzer officiating. Additional services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton, Iowa. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with Chaplain Jon Moravec of Sunrise Retirement Community officiating, all at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Edna was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Albaton, Iowa, the daughter of Francis and Emma (Fink) Olson. She was raised in the Albaton area, where she attended Whiting, Iowa, schools. She graduated from Whiting High School with the class of 1946. She then attended Samuels School of Beauty in Sioux City.

She married Charles J. "Chuck" Sponder on April 17, 1948, in South Sioux City. Edna worked in the beauty salon at T.S. Martin Department Store a couple of years, before she raised her family. In 1965, she started working at Hall Monument Co. and worked there until her retirement in 1997.

She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church, but had always maintained her connections and friendships with Skien Lutheran Church in Albaton. She enjoyed playing bingo and had been active in several bowling leagues for years.

Survivors include two daughters, Charlene and Carl Hesse and Shirley and Pat Frank, all of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Jody and Ryan Lee and Jill and Chad Hathaway, all of Sioux City and Todd Frank and his friend, Brenda of Sloan, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Hesse, Madison Lee and Trevor Lee; a special cousin, Larry Olson of Sloan; sisters-in-law, Berniece Sponder, Florence Sponder and Josie and Dean Prather; brothers-in-law, Stanley Sponder and Leo and Helen Sponder; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chuck; two brothers, Clyde and Donald F.; and a great-granddaughter, Morgan Lee.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial in Edna's name in care of the family.
