Edward P. Bitter

Sioux City - Edward Pierce Bitter, 94, of Bellevue, Neb., went home to his Lord Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha. Edward resided in Sioux City for 91 years before moving to Nebraska to be near family.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1212 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City, with the Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church parish center immediately following the graveside service. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Edward was born in Sioux City, on Jan. 30, 1919, to Edward and Beatrice (LaPointe) Bitter.
He married Inez Josephine DeBoise on June 1, 1942. They were married for 61 years. Edward enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II and continued in the Army Reserves until an honorable discharge was granted him in 1954. Edward worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years.
He was a 68-year member of the American Legion Monahan Post in Sioux City. He also served his community and church through many years of volunteer work with the Boy Scouts of America, Knights of Columbus, and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and elementary school.
Edward spent his retirement years as an aspiring artist, painting beautiful landscapes that he generously shared with family and friends. He will be remembered for his great strength and faith in the face of adversity, his wisdom, unwavering dedication to God and family, huge smile, and infectious positive attitude and love of life.
Edward is survived by a son, Robert and Luana Bitter of Pratt, Kan.; daughter, Catherine and Kenneth Bliven of Bellevue; daughter-in-law, Sharon Bitter of Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
Edward is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Inez J. Bitter; daughter, Janice Ann Graff; son, David Michael Bitter; son-in-law, Robert Graff; sisters, Charlotte Casey and Lucille Busch; and a brother, Andrew Bitter.
