Edward L. Moran Jr., 84, of Newcastle died Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Newcastle. Burial will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary and prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes in Sioux City. Visitation will resume 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Edward was born on Feb. 25, 1932, in Sioux City, the son of Edward and Kathryn (Murphy) Moran. He attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School, Trinity High School and graduated from Bishop Heelan High School. He continued his education at the University of South Dakota. After his education, Edward joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War.
He married Shirley Young. She died on Oct. 13, 1980. He married Romaine Albrecht-Kneifl on Nov. 29, 1986. They made their home in Newcastle. Edward was an insurance agent for almost 50 years.
Edward was a past member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Newcastle, where he was a past board president and trustee. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 62 in Newcastle, the Sioux City Rotary Club, a Papal Volunteer of America and helped form the Newcastle Youth Center.
Survivors include his wife, Romaine Moran of Newcastle; five children, Edward Moran III of Sioux City, Mary Jo (Mike) Rago of Loveland, Colo., Cynthia (Mark) Fachman of McCook Lake, S.D., Anne Moran-Gharib of Frederick, Colo., and Steven (Peggy) Moran of Leawood, Kan.; six stepchildren, Trina (John) Joines of Sioux City, Randy (Jeanne) Kneifl of Newcastle, Lonnie (Terri) Kneifl of Sioux City, Gary (Becky) Kneifl of Rocklin, Calif., Matthew (Sabina) Kneifl of Clive, Iowa, and Jason (Missy) Kneifl of Omaha; 24 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Alice Judy of Oregon; and a brother, James (Bonnie) Moran of McCook Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; and a grandson, DJ Traylor.
