Elaine E. Garvey, 94, Lawton, Iowa, formerly of Climbing Hill and Sioux City, passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015, at Char-Mac Assisted Living in Lawton.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, Iowa, with the Rev. Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.
Elaine was born on March 11, 1921, in Sioux City, the daughter of Fred A. and Emma (Ruhaak) Kamm. She was raised in the Sioux City and Moville area. Emma attended country school through the eighth grade, spending her first years of high school in Moville. She then graduated as salutatorian from Climbing Hill High School in 1938. She attended the National Business Training School in Sioux City, then was employed as office secretary for 10 years at ASCS. Elaine retired from Sieg Company in Sioux City after 37 years as office secretary.
She married Francis Garvey in Vermillion, S.D. in March 1966. He passed away in July 1987. In 1989, she moved to Climbing Hill where she was a caring and cheerful companion and caregiver to her mother for several years. Elaine had been a resident of Char-Mac Assisted Living since June 2011, where the staff became like family.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Elaine was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Midway, Iowa. She enjoyed sewing her own clothes, knitting, challenging jigsaw puzzles and was an avid reader and collector of books.
Elaine is survived by her sister, Norma (Kamm) Sulsberger; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Francis; and brother, Fred.
