Elaine Ione Stansberry (Mercer)

SIOUX CITY -- Elaine I. Stansberry, 84, of Sioux City died peacefully on Mother's Day, May 9, 2010, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at River Hills Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Kevin W. Roach officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to christysmith.com.

Elaine was born April 16, 1926, in Centralia, Mo., the daughter of O. Spencer and Marjorie (Schoepfer) Mercer. The family moved to South Dakota and Iowa, when she was a young child. The family moved to Sioux City in the late 1930s. She attended East High School.

She married Delvin Wilde in 1944. She then married Francis L. Stansberry on Feb. 4, 1955, in Elk Point, S.D. She was one of the first women to be a machine operator at Sioux Tools. She also worked at Wincharger and Zenith Corp. In her retirement, she was in great demand as a care giver, hired by families to care for their loved ones either at home or in a care facility.

She was a member of River Hills Church of Assembly of God. She enjoyed golfing and flower and vegetable gardening. She had a reputation for being a loving, caring and giving person.

Survivors include her husband, Francis "Roy" Stansberry of Sioux City; four children, Dennis Wilde and his wife, Cheri of Sioux City, Connie Wilde of Sioux City, Toni Archibald and her husband, Steven of Sioux City and Mark Stansberry of Sioux City; a stepdaughter, Pamela Valencia of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Bill and Barbara Mercer of Littleton, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Gay Mercer of Amana, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews, who called her Aunt Lainie; and her lifelong friend, Betty Jaques of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Royce "George" Mercer; and her sister, Murial Graham.

Pallbearers will be Jay Wilde, Shane Eik, Christopher Miller, Harold Schoepfer, Lonnie Wilde and Kirk Jaques.
