Eleanor Jean Nielsen (Stokes)

NORTH SIOUX CITY -- Eleanor Nielsen, 76, of North Sioux City died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at Indian Hills Nursing & Rehab Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Eleanor was born on Jan. 13, 1932, in Sioux City, the daughter of Harvey and Doris Stokes. She attended East High School in Sioux City.

She married Delmar Nielsen on Sept. 11, 1949. They farmed in Dixon, Newcastle and Laurel, Neb. They moved to Sioux City in 1966. Eleanor worked at Bellas Hess for seven years and JC Penney's for 16 years. Delmar died in 1996.

She was a member of the Goodwill Auxiliary and enjoyed many years of volunteer work at the Sioux City Goodwill. She helped with Alzheimer's support groups for several years. She was an active member and past president and secretary of the local SCORE group as well as president and secretary of the Senior Soo's of South Sioux City. She was also a member of the local Red Hat Society.

Eleanor enjoyed sewing, gardening, traveling and collecting things. She had a very close friend, Jim Purcell, who she enjoyed spending time with, playing cards, dice and occasional trips to the casino.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Janet and Jeff Morris of Steven's Point, Wis., and Peggy and Kenneth Schmitz of South Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Jerry and Sue Nielsen of Sioux City, and Brad and Dawn Nielsen of Madison, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Zach and Camie Morris, Brett Morris, Kyle Nielsen, Andrea Nielsen, Amanda and Bill Grinde, Andrew Nielsen, Amber Schmitz, Jill Schmitz and Cari Schmitz; a great-grandchild, Marie Schmitz; and three sisters, Ruth and her husband, Dean Snyder, Gladys and her husband, Marvin Jensen, all of Sioux City, and Doris Stokes of Eden Prairie, Minn.; three brothers, Harvey Jr and his wife, Kelly of Hinton, Ia., Donald and his wife, Mary of Sioux City, and Walter and his wife, Connie of Keller, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Martha Switzer.

Pallbearers will be Zach Morris, Brett Morris, Andrew Nielsen, Bill Grinde, Dan Jensen and Tod Stokes. Honorary pallbearers will be Kyle Nielsen and Andrea Nielsen, Amanda Grinde and Amber Schmitz, Cari Schmitz, Jill Schmitz, Marie Schmitz and Camie Morris.
