Ellen Marie Cavanaugh, 78, of Sioux City, formerly of Anthon, Iowa, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Anamosa, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 7:30 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.
Ellen was born June 2, 1929, in Anamosa, the daughter, of Francis Leo Maudsley and Celestena (O'Brien) Maudsley. She attended Anamosa Public Schools through her sophomore year in high school and graduated from St. Angela's Academy in Carroll, Iowa in 1947. She attended St. Joseph School of Nursing in Omaha.
In 1950, she married Leonard Cavanaugh and they moved to Anthon, Iowa, in 1952. She was a homemaker and mother of eight children. She also assisted her husband in his veterinary, livestock feed and elevator business. In 1975, she moved to Sioux City and received her registered nurse designation from Western Iowa Tech Community College in 1977. She worked for many years as a registered nurse at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.
She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon and Catholic Daughters of America. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Bill and Susie Cavanaugh of Clear Lake, Iowa; six daughters and husbands, Mary Cavanaugh of Colorado Springs, Colo., Julie and Jere Jackson of Rapid City, S.D., Colleen and Fred Bortscheller of Le Mars, Iowa, Kerry and Stan Huffman of Correctionville, Iowa, Beth and Dr. Peter Jansen of Orange Park, Fla., and Molly and Bob Wickert of Omaha; two sisters and their husbands, Kathryn and Earl Beisell of Anamosa, Iowa, and Jane and Dale Ortner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a brother, Tom Maudsley of Des Moines; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Daniel Cavanaugh; a grandson, Jacob Huffman; and a sister, Mary Frances Brady.
