SIOUX CITY -- Elsie M. Sharum, 91, of Sergeant Bluff, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ryan Christenson of St. James United Methodist Church officiating. Private graveside services will be Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home.
Elsie was born March 1, 1918, in Rock Township, rural Woodbury County, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Margarete (Jensen) Maack. She was raised on a farm in the Cushing and Kingsley, Iowa, area. She graduated from Kingsley High School in 1937.
She married Walter Owen Sharum on March 5, 1943, in South Sioux City. After her marriage, the couple lived in the Bronson, Iowa, area until 1950, when they moved to Sioux City. She worked on the assembly line at Zenith Radio. She then went to work at the Reuben H. Donnelly Corporation. She also was a homemaker and housewife. Owen died June 3, 1984, in Sioux City. She moved to Sergeant Bluff around 2006.
She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time in her flower and vegetable gardens. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, LouAnn and John Riker of Sergeant Bluff; her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Cheryl Sharum of Tempe, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Jeff and Mark Butzke and Angela, Jessica and Megan Riker; five great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Donald P. Butzke of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Virgina Butzke; and two brothers, one in infancy and Ernest Maack.
