Emery was born March 7, 1912, to Katie (Warneke) and John Hardersen Jr. of Hinton. He grew up on a farm near Hinton and attended country school at Hungerford No. 7. He was baptized as Emery Johann Hardersen on June 16, 1912, at the present St. Paul's Lutheran Church, which was constructed in 1912. His sponsors were Clara Ludwig, Henry Junck and J. Hardersen. He was confirmed on June 11, 1927.
On May 23, 1946, Emery married Helen Larson in Des Moines, Iowa. Together, they lived in the home that they built on the family farm near Hinton for 65 years. He was a lifelong livestock and grain farmer.
Emery enjoyed bowling with Helen on the St. Paul’s Lutheran Mixed League bowling team; he was a member of the St. Paul’s 500 card club, the 55+ Club, and the Neighborhood 500 Card Club. He was a trustee and an elder at the church. In his earlier years, he was a member of the National Farmers Organization. Emery always looked forward to attending the Plymouth County Fair, the Farm Ag Shows, and liked the challenge of engineering solutions to machinery problems on the farm.
Emery traveled to Germany by ship as a teenager, and enjoyed his first trip by plane when he and Helen traveled back to Europe for their 40th wedding anniversary, visiting Germany, Switzerland, and other European countries.
Emery took pleasure in being around his family, and in large family gatherings. He enjoyed church activities and sporting events as well as sharing stories and reminiscing about his life. He loved visiting with people and helping others. His family always came first, and he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by two sons, Darrel (Cheryl) of Onawa, Iowa, and Larry (Donna) of Hinton; three daughters, Marlene (Tom) Baumann of Washta, Iowa, Marilyn (Bill) Murra of Schaller, Iowa, and Judy (Dan) Schwartz of Coralville, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Naomi Hardersen; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
