MOVILLE, Iowa -- E. Wayne McCune, 95, of Moville passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Moville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.
Wayne was born Feb. 13, 1915, in Luton, Iowa, to Ernest and Edith (Wilson) McCune. He grew up in Woodbury County and lived on several area farms. He attended school in Moville and graduated in 1932. After school, he worked for several area farmers before entering the U.S. Army in 1942. Wayne served during World War II with the 6th Cavalry and was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge.
After his discharge from the service, he returned to Moville, where he married Coral Dockweiler on Dec. 30, 1945. She passed away March 21, 2002. They began their lives together on a farm south of Moville. In 1955, they purchased a farm north of Bronson, Iowa. On this farm, he practiced many early conservation techniques like contour planting and terracing. He farmed for 20 years before retiring and moving to Moville.
He continued to help friends and neighbors with their farming operations after his retirement. This allowed him to watch how farming and conservation practices changed over the years. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, visiting family and friends and taking special trips to Alaska and Europe. He enjoyed politics, staying active with current events and having good conversations with family and friends.
Survivors include his only son, Loren McCune of Moville; a brother-in-law, Duane Voas of Burnsville, Minn.; a niece, Sheryl Voas of Burnsville; a nephew, Larry and Sarah "Jane" Voas of Biloxi, Miss.; and several other nieces and nephews.
