Gene was born on April 1, 1938, in Peterson, Iowa, the son of Lamount and Ruth (Vaux) Baier. He attended school and graduated from Peterson High School.
Gene married Kristin Ankerstjerne on Dec. 20, 1958. They made their home in the Peterson area, moving to Roanoke, Va., in 1961. They moved back to Peterson in 1978 and finally to Moville in 1992. Gene was a jack of all trades. Over the years, he was a mechanic, sold insurance, was a police officer for more than 15 years, farmed on the family farm in Peterson, worked in a lumberyard and ended his work career at Western Iowa Tech Community College working in building maintenance, retiring in 2003.
Gene loved spending time with his grandchildren, whether it was going fishing, watching their sports or giving grandfatherly advice. He was an outdoorsman who liked hunting, fishing, scouting and trapping. Gene also enjoyed watching classic western movies, building things for the house and yard, and doing his honey-do jobs.
