Gene was born on April 1, 1938, in Peterson, Iowa, the son of Lamount and Ruth (Vaux) Baier. He attended school and graduated from Peterson High School.

Gene loved spending time with his grandchildren, whether it was going fishing, watching their sports or giving grandfatherly advice. He was an outdoorsman who liked hunting, fishing, scouting and trapping. Gene also enjoyed watching classic western movies, building things for the house and yard, and doing his honey-do jobs.
Survivors include his wife, Kristy Baier of Moville; his sons, Drew and Kim Baier of Sergeant Bluff, Adam Baier of Webb, Iowa, and Derek Baier of Sidnie, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Alicia (Tim) Everton, Austin, Alexys, Sidney, Spencer, Brendan and Aric Baier; and a brother, Jerry Baier of Sioux Rapids, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Baier.
