JEFFERSON, S.D. -- Eugene LeRoy Huls, 73, of Jefferson passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 3 p.m. today at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, with Terri Poole officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .

Gene was born Sept. 28, 1937, at Akron, Iowa, the son of Christopher and Evelyn (Lawrence) Huls. He attended school in Akron until moving to Sioux City with his family and attending Sioux City Public Schools.

He married Frances Bastian. Together they made their home in Sioux City. Gene worked for a short time at Iowa Pork before going to work for John Morrell. He worked as a supervisor, retiring in 2000.

Gene served with the U.S. Naval Reserve, had coached Little League and was a past Mason. He liked fishing, playing cribbage, cards, bowling and his horses. Gene was a mechanic and enjoyed working on cars.

Survivors include a daughter, Tami and Brad Raabe of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sons, Randy and Myra Huls of Floyd Knobs, Ind., and Rick Huls of Sioux City; one stepson, Troy Weis of Sioux City; one stepdaughter, Rhonda Toben of Sioux City; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Davis of Sioux City, and Jody and Richard Farrington of Hardy, Ky.; two brothers, Kenneth and Lorraine Huls of Sioux City, and Robert and Karen Huls of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and an uncle, Harold and Helena Lawrence of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marjori; and a stepson, Jeff Irish.
