Eugene McNaughton

Eugene K. McNaughton, 89, of Sioux City, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, at Char-Mac Assisted Living in Lawton, Iowa.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., in Sioux City, with the Rev. Merrill G. Muller officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, the family will be present 6 to 8 p.m. anda prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. In keeping with their father's wishes, the family asks that everyone wear their favorite Chicago Cubs gear to the visitation and the funeral. Gene was born on July 16, 1928, in Sioux City, to Orville and Dolly (Wiggs) McNaughton. He grew up in Sioux City and attended East High School. Gene served as a seaman first class with the Coast Guard from 1945 to 1947 during World War II.
He married Joan Camarigg on July 3, 1948 in Elk Point, S.D. The couple had six children, Susan, Cindy, Debra, Lori, Tina and Buddy. Gene worked at the Sioux City Stockyards as a cattle driver for several of the area meat packing plants including Sioux City Dressed Beef, Needham Packing Company and Flavorland Pack. Later, he went to work as a cattle inspector for the State of Iowa for 10 years until the state stopped that program. He then went to work for Sioux City Stockyards Co. and worked there until its closing on March 29, 2002, when he retired at age 74. During his time in the Stockyards, he saw many changes to the industry, he even saw John F. Kennedy campaign for president on horseback on Sept. 22, 1960 at the Sioux City Stockyards. After retirement from the yards, he worked part-time at the Orpheum Theater doing maintenance, in the summer time he was a ticket taker at Sioux City Explorers games.
Gene was a hard worker and could always be heard telling his kids and grandkids to "work hard." His life revolved around his family. He enjoyed family gatherings, especially Sunday dinners and get togethers. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, family camping trips, watching sports of all kinds. Football, golf and baseball were his favorites, especially his Chicago Cubs.
Surviving are his four daughters, Susan (Kevin) Rentel, Debra McNaughton Lori McNaughton and Tina McNaughton, all of Sioux City; a son, Gene "Buddy" McNaughton of Orange County, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Rose McNaughton of Littleton, Colo.; brother-in-law, Steve (Linda) Camarigg of Sioux City; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joan; daughter, Cindy Munger; and two brothers.
