Eugene H. Sachau, 90, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at a local nursing home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Liz Tucker officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Gene was born on Sept. 7, 1925, in Climbing Hill, Iowa, to August and Lillian (Hansen) Sachau. In 1937, Gene moved to Sioux City with his family and attended Sioux City schools. He then moved to Seattle, Wash., and worked in the shipyards as a welder while attending trade school. Gene served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. After returning from the service, he gained his certification in painting through the G.I. Bill. Gene then began his career as a self-employed painting contractor, painting many houses and businesses in the Sioux City area.
He enjoyed golfing, bowling, cars, listening to country music, playing guitar, watching Cubs baseball, following current events, and spending time with family.
Those left to honor his memory include his sister, Lucy Miller-Harris of Sioux City; nieces and nephews, Greg Miller, Debby Munson and Julie Miller-Pranke, all of Sioux City, Walter Sachau Jr, Carol Murphy and Gene Sachau, all of San Diego; and several great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Walter Sachau Sr.; sister, Lola Pallas; nephew, Bob Pallas; brothers-in-law, Millord C. Miller, Harold Pallas and John Q. Harris; and sister-in-law, Anne Sachau.
