Eunice M. Hansen

July 29, 1922 — November 1, 2017

Eunice M. Hansen, 95, of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017, at Holy Spirit Retirement Community in Sioux City.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Monday at Morningside Lutheran Church, 700 S. Martha, Sioux City. Private family graveside services will be Monday morning in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, prior to services, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Eunice was born on July 29, 1922, on a farm near Emerson, Neb., to Edwin and Ida (Rodgers) Gustafson. Her mother died when she was 11 years old, and her Grandmother Gustafson moved in with their family to help raise her and her brother and sister. She attended rural schools in grades one through eight and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1939. She then attended Wayne State Teachers College. Upon receiving her teaching certificate, she taught in and around Wakefield, Neb., prior to getting married and moving to Sioux City in the early 1950s.
She married Art Hansen when he came home from the service on April 28, 1945, and they celebrated their 71 years of marriage before Art passed away in December of 2016. Once her children were all in school, she worked part-time at the Ben Franklin Store in Morningside for many years and upon her and Art’s retirement, they both worked part-time for a number of years for Southern Hills Hy-Vee. Eunice and Art’s family made the Morningside area of Sioux City their home, they attended Morningside Lutheran Church regularly, and were very active in the church. Family was important to her with three children, nine grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She thanked the Lord for her family and friends and wants to always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
Eunice is survived by her children, Randy (Becky) Hansen of Sioux City, Jane (Dennis) Mogensen of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Julie (Mike) Koson of Sioux City; her nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Faith Olson of Monterey, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Ida Gustafson; husband, Art; a brother, Berneal; and an infant brother, Eugene.
The family wishes to extend our thanks for the loving care given to our mother by Dr. Larry Sellers and his staff, Mercy Medical doctors and nurses during her final hospitalization, Holy Spirit Retirement Home staff and residents, and Hospice of Siouxland.
