The delightful Eunice (June) Zediker, 102, of Sioux City passed Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Whispering Creek Senior Living. Visitation will begin Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. with services at 10:30 at Grace United Methodist Church; burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mapleton, Iowa. Pallbearers will be her six grandsons with honorary pallbearers being her six granddaughters.
June was born in Grygla, Minnesota on April 2, 1922 to F. M and Helma (Christensen) Lane, the fifth of seven children. As a child, Eunice moved to Iowa and graduated from Castana High School in 1940 where she excelled in volleyball.
On April 18, 1940, she was united in marriage to Arnold Zediker, and the couple farmed in the Castana area. After living in Galva and Schaller, Arnold and June moved to Sioux City in 1962 where June assumed the task of leading the robust catalogue department at JC Penney, a position at which she excelled and loved. For many years after retirement, gathering with JCPenney colleagues for lunch delighted her.
June was an outstanding bowler well into her late 80's. However, watching her beloved Chicago Cubs and Hawkeyes could be exciting as, with the ever present coffee cup in hand, she regularly gave coaching advice to the tv. Her laughter came easy and often, especially when playing Pinochle and Cribbage and winning. Following their children and grandchildren in softball, football, baseball and basketball entertained Arnold and June for many years as they traversed the country sitting hours in the stands, bleachers, and on chairs while cheering for family. On the home front, no one served a more delicious meal than June or made a better pie. The grandchildren fondly remember the tins and tins of homemade cookies and treats during the holidays.
Those left to mourn include sons, Avery (Kay) of Sioux City, Arnie (Phyllis) of Urbandale, and daughter-in-law Nancy of Sioux City, twelve grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, many great and great-great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.
June was preceded in death by her beloved Arnold, her parents, three sisters, three brothers, son Steven, daughter Judy and son-in-law Dennis Weaver.
We shall miss this dear, fine lady. Memorials may be directed to Midwest Hospice or Grace Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com.
