HINTON, Iowa -- Florence "Dot" Held, 91, of Hinton died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.
Florence was born on the family farm east of Hinton on Jan. 18, 1920. She was the daughter of Frederick W. and Garcia Belle (Yount) Held. She lived in Hinton until she moved to Countryside Nursing Home in Sioux City in 2003. She graduated from National Business Training School and worked as manager of Milligan's Feed and Vet Supply in Sioux City until she retired in 1982.
She was a member of Hinton United Methodist Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. At the age of 87, she completed her GED through WIT, becoming the oldest person in Iowa and the second oldest in the nation to do so. She spoke at the commencement ceremony. Florence was always up on current events and loved music. She enjoyed being on the computer, growing flowers and playing the organ.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Fern Held of Hinton; four nieces and one nephew, Jeanne (Don) Blackstone of Meriden, Iowa, Beverly Johnson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Heidi Johnson of Norfolk, Neb., Bruce (Barb) Held of Hinton, and Karen (Leland) Hathaway of Turin, Iowa; a nephew-in-law, Dr. Frank Bever; and many great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister and her husband, Blanche (Ernie) Reynolds; her brothers and their spouses, Frederick (Irene) Held, George (Bertha) Held, Clarence Held and Wayne (Delores) Held; and a niece, Marilyn Held Bever.
