Hornick, Iowa - Frances W. (Washburn) Doherty, 90, of Whiting, Iowa, formerly of Hornick, passed away Friday, May 23, 2014, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Sunday, during the regular worship service, at Holly Springs Bible Fellowship Church in Holly Springs, Iowa. The Rev. Jim Thomas will take some time to honor Fran's life. Following the service Sunday a potluck picnic will be held in Southwood Park in Smithland, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City.
Frances was born on Aug. 4, 1923, in Hornick, to Frank and Blanche (Steinhoff) Washburn. Frances graduated from Hornick High School and then attended Morningside College and National Business College.
She was united in marriage to Patrick Doherty on June 24, 1964, in Chicago, Ill. She lived in Chicago for 45 years, where she worked at Griswold Accounting and Advertising Firm. The couple moved to Fort Meyers, Fla., before she returned to Hornick in 1987.
She was a member of the Holly Springs Bible Fellowship Church. She also enjoyed spending time with children, gardening and landscaping her yard. She was an avid reader and liked doing crossword, word find and jigsaw puzzles. Anyone that knew her, knew her as "Aunt Fran." She was a friend to many, and never judged anyone.
She is survived by two stepdaughters, Patricia Mac Farlan and Shelia Parejko, both of Chicago; her brother, Dale Washburn of Sloan, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Douglas and Rita Washburn of Hornick, Nancy and Kevin Fehrman of Eagle, Idaho, Barb and (Dirk) Hansen of Hornick, Mike, David (Donna) Bryan, Joel (Pat) Bryan of Moville, and Susan (Thomas) LeFebvre of Mapleton, Iowa; and so many grandnieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Blanche Washburn; her husband, Patrick Doherty; her sister, Ellen (Sylvan) Bryan; her nephew, Ken Michael Washburn; and her sister-in-law, Charry J. (Small) Washburn.
