Francis Linden Barta

SIOUX CITY -- Francis L. Barta, 87, of Sioux City passed away on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at a local hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tony Nester officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U. S. Army Reserve. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be sent to www.christysmith.com .

Francis was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Lesterville, S.D., the son of Richard and Helen (Waloch) Barta. He attended Lesterville Roosevelt High School and graduated in 1941. He went on to Richmond, Calif., where he worked in the shipyards building liberty ships.

Francis entered the U.S. Army in November of 1948 and completed Basic Training at Fort Riley, Kan. He then attended Fort Sam Houston Radiology School and served in the Army Technician Medical Corps at the 14th Field Hospital in Korea. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army on Nov. 8, 1951.

Francis married Darlene M. Rempp on April 18, 1952, in Yankton, S.D. The couple moved to Sioux City in November 1953. He worked for the Lewis System Armored Car Service and later the U.S. Post Office for 27 years as a postal and philatelic store clerk.

Francis retired in 1988 and moved with Darlene to Sunrise Retirement Community in 1993, where he was an active volunteer. He was an avid Chicago Cubs Fan. Francis was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Club and enjoyed serving as an usher. He was also a member of the National Association of Federal Employees, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1973, and the American Legion Post No. 697.

Francis is survived by his wife, Darlene, of 59 years; his son, Brad (Michelle) Barta of Sioux City; daughter, Linda (Roger) Chesley of Overland Park, Kan.; and grandchildren, Ashley and Brittany Barta, and Krista and Corey Chesley. He is also survived by two sisters, Loretta Hackett of Yankton, S.D., and Viola Scherschligt of Wessington Springs, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Helen (Waloch) Barta.
