Francis Joseph "Joe" Cosgrove, 88, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015, in Sioux City.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Joe's brother, the Rev. Jerome P. Cosgrove officiating and Monsignor Kenneth Seifried and the Rev. Dan Rupp assisting. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.
Joe was born on July 18, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of Francis Joseph Cosgrove and Mary Catherine (Knowles) Cosgrove. He lived in Sioux City most of his life, attending Blessed Sacrament School, graduating from Trinity High School in 1944, and Creighton University in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific from 1944 to 1946 on the USS Ticonderoga and on the USS Topeka.
Joe married Ellen K. Harter on June 17, 1950, in Sioux City. Joe practiced law in Sioux City for more than 60 years. He began his practice with Grant Wetz. Following Wetz's death in 1971, Joe practiced with Paul Yaneff, and eventually with Joe's son, Frank, and later, Tobias.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish and the Iowa State and Woodbury County Bar Associations. He was a past president of the Woodbury County Bar Association. Joe was an avid reader, enjoyed golfing, but most of all loved time spent with family and friends. He would regale them all with his original humorous tales, sometimes even including bits of truth.
Joe is survived by five children, Martha (Jack) Shepard of Windsor, Colo., Frank J. (Cheri) Cosgrove of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Thaddeus E. (Deborah) Cosgrove of Holstein, Iowa, Sarah A. (Ric) Krommenhoek of Sioux City, and Tobias A. Cosgrove of Sibley, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and siblings, James (Bev) Cosgrove, the Rev. Jerome P. Cosgrove, Lenore Cosgrove and Kay Mahoney.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son, Luke; and his siblings, Suzanne Floeder, Patricia Steere, Eugene Cosgrove and Barbara Sullivan.
