Franklin "Harry" "Sr." Downs

Franklin Harry Downs Sr., 76, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., with Pastor Udell Coleman of Verdi United Methodist Church of Verdi, Minn., officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Franklin Harry Downs was born on April 10, 1932, in Holstein, Iowa, to Nathaniel and Elsie (Davison) Downs. Harry attended and graduated from high school in Climbing Hill, Iowa, with the class of 1949.

Harry and Iris N. Newell were married on Nov. 11, 1951, in Sioux City. They lived the majority of their lives in the Sioux City area. Harry worked for over 40 years as a truck driver/warehouseman for Joe Rosenthal and Sons.

Harry loved his trains and was a member of the National Model Railroad Association. He was a past Master of the Sioux City Masons, Lodge 615 and past Patron of the Morningside Rose Croix Chapter 502 O.E.S. He was also a member of the Scottish Rites and the Sioux City Abu Bekr Shrine Chapter.

Survivors include a son, Frank Jr. and special friend, Carolina Galubitz of Bloomington, Minn.; a brother, Hugh and wife, Shirley Downs of Jasper, Ind.; a sister, Wilma and husband, Jack Toschner of Walterboro, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Marlene Downs of Sioux City; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Iris in 1994; a daughter, Lettie Norene; and brothers, John and James.
