Fred E. Desy, 84, of Sioux City passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at a nursing home in Cherokee, Iowa.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington Township Cemetery at Moville, Iowa.
Fred was born on Oct. 11, 1929, in Sioux City, to Albert and Clara (Baker) Desy. He grew up in Sioux City. Fred joined the U.S. Navy in 1948 and was discharged in February 1952. He very proudly served on the USS Coral Sea aircraft carrier while in the Navy.
He met his wife, Marjorie at American Popcorn Company. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Schultzen on Jan. 9, 1954, in Sioux City.
He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed gardening, camping, hunting and fishing. At the age of 84, he went deer hunting. Fred belonged to the American Legion in Sergeant Bluff.
He also enjoyed helping out with Marjorie’s day care for 29 years. Fred would go to auctions and find treasures. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Marjorie; son, Dennis (Suzanne) Desy of Sioux City; daughters, Lori (John) Newell and Diane Desy of Sioux City; grandchildren, Karen Newell and Cody Newell; great-grandchildren, Shadyn Newell-Iverson and Raylie Newell; sisters, Rowena (Tony) DeFazio and Marilyn Desy of Sioux City; stepbrothers, Marvin (Pam) Desy of Sioux City, and Melvin Desy of California; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Desy; sister, Dorothy Fortune; brother, Phil Desy; stepbrothers, Mike Desy and Marlin Desy; and stepsister, Martha Anderson.
